What! You may be moving to China? And you've already been there before? Wow! That is very exciting. I will be sad if Shelf Life doesn't fit into your life there, but I totally get it. I have not been blogging much lately and I've been toying with giving it up all together. It just takes so much time. And it seems to complicate my life because of that. In any case, I wish you luck and happiness on your new adventure.

Like you, I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, but the rest of See's books have left me a little disappointed. I read Shanghai Girls awhile ago and don't remember a lot of details, but I do remember that I liked it more than Peony in Love, but lots less than Snow Flower. I hate when the first book I read by an author blows me away and nothing else ever lives up to that first book. But I find myself reading each and every subsequent book hoping that it will thrill me the way the first one did. The others authors that immediately come to mind are: Sue Miller, Elizabeth Berg, Anita Shreve, Amy Tan and Chris Bohjalian.

I really liked this book and also heard of it from Pam's blog. I thought it was interesting that at times you felt like the narrator was the author himself. Which sounds funny, but sometimes there was personal comments or mentions of other times that made me think it was the author. I don't know, maybe I am just overthinking it. Anyway's, I really enjoyed your review.

The "magical" quality is very, very subdued. This is not a Disney production by any means. The comparison to The Time Traveler's Wife is good because it had that same sort of "realism" that let you believe in Henry's illness instantly, even though your rational mind KNEW it was impossible. Same thing here, and with the same touch of great prose.

I haven't heard of this one. It sounds intriguing, but I usually don't enjoy books with a "magical" quality to them. Though I did love The Time Traveler's Wife. Something to consider.

Great interview! I loved how he described using words that were actually in use during the time period of the story. That must be incredibly hard. How do you even know which words to research? That really struck me.

Touche my friend. I can't say that I'm going to instantly forgive the revisionists out there, but I do begrudingly grant that they are bringing Austen et all out of the forgotten/books-are-boring realm. I can be glad that others are prefering Austen over TV, with or without zombies.

I have to say, though, that I have less faith than you do that the masses will not forget Austen. Unfortunately I've seen and heard too many ridiculously stupid things from the mouths of the so-called educated American youth that I have ceased to believe there are just some things that they cannot forget or not learn.
